Why is nutrition important for our wellbeing?

Proteins, carbs, fats, fibre, vitamins, minerals, amino acids, we've all heard these words.
And it turns out that the key to giving our bodies what they deserve to be at their best is
~ balance. Seeking out the good stuff, enjoying what we love, going easy on the bad
stuff.

Ideally we all need plenty of nutrient-rich whole foods each day, to provide us with the
right amount of goodies we need, however it can be difficult to find all of these elements
in our modern diets. There are some well documented reasons for this - our strict or
limited eating habits, consuming too many processed foods, harmful chemicals and
pollution causing an increase in free radicals which damage our cells, and poor
nutritional content of produce in our shops (due to soil depletion and over-farming,
not to mention the picking, packing and storage processes of many fruits and veg!)
Why is nutrition so important?
By getting the right nutrients, we are nourishing our bodies, promoting health, growth,
development, wellbeing and preventing the risk of chronic diseases. It is unfortunately
very common these days to have deficiencies in such nutrients as;
iron (essential for healthy red blood cells which transport oxygen) iodine (for a
well-functioning thyroid - metabolism, growth and brain development) magnesium (for
essential enzyme reactions) vitamin D and calcium (for healthy bones) and B vitamins
(for blood and brain function).
And we may not even realise that we are missing out on these things. However, our
bodies will be telling us in many subtle ways that it's not feeling great, like headaches,
skin problems, digestive issues, fatigue, weak hair and bones, and poor mental health.
It can be easy to overlook nutrition as a way to combat these issues. Lacking in one
single vitamin or mineral can have a huge effect on our bodies. To give an example, we
only need a small very amount of magnesium (around 350 mg depending on age and
gender) but getting less than we need can cause many issues from migraines to
depression to restless legs to diabetes.
So, how can we expect our bodies to function properly without the right nutrients?
And how do we know exactly what we need? It can feel like a bit of a minefield!
